FOLK INDIGO OPEN HOUSE

Norwood, OH – December 14, 2024 – Folk Indigo is hosting an Open House event following a sold-out Javanese Batik Workshop on December 14, 2024, at 4216 Montgomery Rd, Norwood.

This Open House, from 4 to 6 PM, invites the public to explore the art of batik, a centuries-old tradition that combines storytelling, sustainability, and cultural heritage.

The Luce Foundation and the American Institute for Indonesian Studies (AIFIS), organizations dedicated to fostering cultural exchange and awareness, support the event.

Celebrating Cultural Heritage
Batik is a wax-resist dyeing technique deeply rooted in Javanese culture and history. Miller, an immigrant from Indonesia, describes batik as more than just fabric: “It’s storytelling through patterns and colors, a testament to the interconnectedness of people and the environment. Sharing batik in the U.S. bridges my heritage with my life in a diverse, vibrant community.”

During the Open House, visitors can:

  • View an exhibit of batik art featuring patterns and designs tied to Javanese cultural and environmental traditions.

  • Learn about the cultural significance of batik and its role as an example of slow fashion.

  • Discover how slow fashion and fair trade can be woven into everyday life through mindful choices and sustainable practices.

A Message of Sustainability
This open house emphasize the philosophy of slow fashion, an antidote to fast fashion’s environmental and human costs. “Batik embodies slow fashion principles,” Miller explains. “Every piece is a labor of love, taking weeks or months to create. It’s an intentional process that honors the artisan, the environment, and the cultural heritage behind it.”

Visitors are encouraged to explore practical ways to embrace slow fashion, such as buying secondhand, supporting fair trade brands, and caring for their clothes to extend their lifespan.

JAVANESE BATIK WORKSHOP

Join us for a hands-on Javanese Batik Workshop, a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the rich tradition of batik-making, a centuries-old textile art form from Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Designed for anyone interested in slow craft and traditional art-making, this workshop invites you to explore the beauty of indigo and wax-resist dyeing techniques in a supportive and creative environment.

You’ll learn the authentic method of creating batik as practiced in Yogyakarta. While the craft of batik traditionally requires years of practice to master its intricacies, we’ll adapt the process to fit our workshop’s time frame by focusing on simpler designs. You’ll still have the opportunity to experience the magic of creating your own batik piece, while learning about the history of batik, natural indigo dyeing, and how batik fits into the broader movement of slow fashion.

Materials are provided, and no previous experience is required—just bring your curiosity and creativity!

This event is made possible with funding from the American Institute for Indonesian Studies and the Henry Luce Foundation.

Space is limited, so reserve your spot today and join us in celebrating the timeless art of Javanese batik, while exploring new ways to slow down and engage thoughtfully with fashion.
